Hello from another Berkshire chap.

Hello all from West Berkshire.

It would appear from others' introductions that, having recently moved, I'm not the only new member from a flood hit area of West Berkshire (begs the question why we chose to live here in the first place! - perhaps siwhite has the answer)

Inevitably I'm keen to share ideas on how to deal with our most pressing concern but away from flood I've always been fascninated with people's ability to craft everything from water stills to wood gasifiers when the need arises.

In an effort to render myself a tad more useful, should the fateful day ever arrive, I've decided that this is probably the best place to start.
I'd like to think that I wouldn't be totally useless in an everyday survival situation (e.g. lost in the hills, weather closing in) but I'd particularly love to learn more about manufacturing survival tools and equipment from everyday items.

I have to admit to also being just a teeny bit fascinated by the concept of a post-apocalyptic world, the psychology of survival and how this might impact the way we might have to live if things ever go really wrong. That said, living so close to stockpiles of warheads I suspect that my chance to find out how theory might translate into reality could be shortlived!

In the meantime just keen to have a look around and start to work out how much I don't know!

Hi Will,

Welcome to LSG Forum, There is sooooo much for you to read here that you would need a year to get through it all...But we don't want you to do that, we want you to be diving in and asking questions as well as going through the past stuff.

Hopefully you will find a few things useful.

Some people may think that our preparation is a waste and that we are being alarmist, I can only say that these people are right-until they're wrong. And the consequences of them being wrong are greater than the consequences of us being wrong.

Aaah Whinno! Welcome!

For those who didn't gather, Whinno and I live about 40 yards apart, so communicating via the internet is a TINY bit lazy....!

Mitsiblue sends me emails and we are at each end of the living room...

Usually asking me to put the kettle on or feed her chocolate.

Bad news Red, the sand filter now lacks pictures :(

Gents

Many thanks for the words of welcome! Particular thanks to S1 for "green-lighting" me :D

Having spent the last couple of hours browsing you guys are to be congratulated on an awesome collective knowledge

Red, all received and understood; I can assure you that our usual topic of neighbourly chat is what brought myself and siwhite here in the first place so there should be no shortage of input from our corner of England's green and pleasant land.

Thanks again gents.

Sorry, I sounded preachy there Whinno and I didn't mean to :(. Its just fair to warn people that we aren't one of those "look in and read stuff" places - more like a small private allotment scheme where everyone chips in

Anywhoo

Welcome aboard and enjoy

S1 - we'll just have to make another sand filter :)

Hello and welcome.

Do I sense the beginnings of a Berkshire Mutual Aid Group (MAG) here?

Welcome aboard
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

That sounds like a fairly sensible idea. There are at least six within the Royal County by my initial tally....

Happy with the concept of a Mutual Aid Group.

What exactly does a MAG do? If it involves huddling together whilst the bombs fall I'd be very good at that. If it involves weekends in the woods planning a bug out strategy I'd be even better!

I see it as more of a social thing in the main, curry nights, chat at the bar, barn raising, clay shoots etc.

It also allows interchange of ideas at a more local level, perhaps group buys, moving on kit to a good home and in extremis a group of like minded people who can offer each other succor and help when it all goes wrong. Can't get home because of the snow, you know of a hole that will welcome you in.

Bomb shelters and weekends in the woods are optional if that is what the group wants.

I will throw my hat in the ring with two suggestions.

Firstly
A curry somewhere central one evening. May I nominate the Tamarind Tree in Lower Basildon as a first guess at central. (open to other suggestions) http://www.tamarindtree.biz/html/home.html

Second
My gun club shoots full bore at Bisley on the first Sunday of every month. How about 3rd October?
